77% of cars are stolen for short-term reasons that have nothing to do with the vehicle's worth, such as joyriding, using it as a temporary means of transportation, or committing another crime.
Unfortunately, insurance doesn't always cover the cost of a stolen vehicle, leaving victims on average with a $5,000 bill to pay out of pocket.
70% of car thefts include the use of the victim's own keys, and half of all automobiles stolen are taken directly from the victim's home or garage. Burglars commonly gain entry to residences through unlocked windows and doors, even when the owner is there. Most burglars will go to great lengths to avoid making eye contact with the homeowner. In 95% of cases, no contact is made with the homeowner at all.
